General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Sawn timber and posts; tannin extract from bark for leather tanning.
Wood and fiber:
Timber is used for fence posts, railway sleepers, and heavy structural applications; less commonly for turnery and cabinet work. Wood is very hard and dense with high natural durability and termite resistance, enabling long service life in ground contact.
Colorants and tanning:
Bark is a source of condensed tannins used for vegetable leather tanning. Water-soluble tannin extracts can be standardized to defined tannin content and applied by conventional tannery processes such as pit and drum tanning for proteinaceous hides.
Properties relevant to use:
High wood density (typically >900 kg/m³ at 12% moisture content) and extractives contribute to termite resistance and ground durability. Bark tannins are mainly condensed-type proanthocyanidins suitable for leather tanning.
Standards and regulation:
For timber, treatability, durability class, and insect/borer resistance are commonly referenced to Australian standards and national grading rules; tannin extracts may be supplied with specifications such as tannin content, moisture, and pH.
Sustainability and sourcing:
Material is obtained from naturally occurring populations and occasionally from cleared land; bark harvesting is regulated by state forestry and biodiversity legislation to avoid overharvesting and protect site productivity.
