Mundulea sericea, also known as the cork bush, is a visually appealing shrub or small tree that can be found in open woodlands throughout Africa and South Asia. It is the only member of its genus to have a range extending beyond Madagascar and shares similarities with some African shrubs in the related genus Tephrosia. This species is commonly found in Madagascar, southern to central Africa, India, and Sri Lanka, with its southernmost limit being northern KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. It typically grows on rocky slopes and in savannahs. The leaves of this plant are compound and alternate, covered in silky hairs. Its flowers are mauve to purple in color and its seed pods are covered in golden brown, velvety hairs that turn grey over time. The bark of the stem and main branches is deeply grooved and corky, and contains the poison rotenone, although the leaves are still browsed by animals. There is a subspecies of this plant found in Madagascar that is sometimes classified as a separate species, Mundulea striata.
