Mimosa somnians, also known as dormideira, is a woody shrub found in the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. It is known for its rapid plant movement, with its leaves quickly folding when touched. Unlike its similar counterpart, Mimosa pudica, Mimosa somnians has bipinnate leaves and more than four subbranchlets originating from multiple points on the branch. Its small leaflets are 4-5 mm long and its flowers form pink balls. The plant propagates through seeds and has various forms, subspecies, and varieties. In Guyana, it is used to calm irritable children through washing. Chemical analysis has shown that Mimosa somnians contains tryptamine and methyltryptamine.
