Lupinus texensis, also known as the Texas bluebonnet or Texas lupine, is a species of lupine found in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and parts of Mexico. It is the state flower of Texas, along with other related species of lupines. This annual plant begins as a small, hard seed that must be exposed to wind, rain, and weather for several months before sprouting. In the fall, it emerges as a small seedling with two cotyledons and later develops a rosette of palmately compound leaves. In the spring, it produces a tall plume of blue flowers with hints of white and pink. While some say the flowers have no scent, others describe it as "sickly sweet." Bluebonnet seeds have a hard outer shell to protect them in dry conditions and can be scarified to encourage germination. Mutations in color have been found in the wild and have been selectively bred to create different color strains. While all native lupine species in Texas are recognized as the state flower, there are distinctions between them and L. texensis.
