Julbernardia paniculata, also known as muchesa, is a medium to large tropical tree found in the warmer parts of south tropical Africa. It is most commonly found at altitudes of 1,000 to 1,200 metres and is the dominant tree in Miombo woodland in central Zambia and northern Malawi. The tree is limited in its range by the availability of wet conditions during the growing season and cannot survive frost or temperatures below 15°C. Its appearance includes grey bark, red leaves, and velvety-brown flowers. The bark is used for tanning leather and the leaves are a valuable food source for cattle. The tree is also a source of nectar, making it important for beekeepers to maintain their production year-round.
