Galega orientalis, also known as fodder galega and eastern galega, is a species of flowering plant in the legume family. It is primarily cultivated as a fodder and forage for livestock, and is native to the Caucasus region. It has been introduced to various other regions for agricultural purposes. This perennial herb has a taproot and rhizome system, and can grow up to 2 meters tall with pinnate leaves. Its inflorescence produces up to 70 lilac-colored flowers and its fruit pods contain up to 8 seeds each. The plant is tolerant of various soil types and can fix nitrogen with the help of its root nodule bacterium, Rhizobium galegae. It is also a host to several fungal species, some of which can be pathogenic. Apart from its use as livestock feed, Galega orientalis has also been investigated for its potential as a source of biogas and as an agent for bioremediation of oil-polluted soils. It is also grown as an ornamental plant and has been considered as a prospective energy crop.
