Ethnobotanical records document that infusions (teas) of Ardisia crenata have been prepared from leaves, sometimes from roots, across three distinct regions. Among the Kawaiisu of eastern California, Zigmond (1991) describes warming a leaf infusion and drinking it to ease colds and respiratory irritation. In New Zealand, Riley (1994) reports Māori mothers making a mild leaf infusion to treat infant colds, and also preparing a root decoction for stomach pain; these preparations are still remembered by contemporary practitioners. On the Philippine island of Luzon, Bennet et al. (2021) note that indigenous communities have used leaf infusions for sore throats and coughs. While the plant is widely cultivated for its ornamental berries, reliable sources focus on these gentle warm drinks or decoctions, and do not describe poultices or macerations for this species.

A practical, simple preparation is a mild leaf tea. Roughly 1–2 g of fresh young leaves (about one to two small sprigs) are rinsed, then simmered or steep in 200–250 mL of water that has just reached a boil, for about 5–7 minutes. The liquid is strained while still warm and drunk in small sips. Alternatively, make a 1:5 tincture by finely chopping leaves and macerating 20 g in 100 mL of 40% ethanol for 2–3 weeks, shaking daily and filtering; the final tincture is taken in small measured drops. Because the plant contains triterpenoid saponins, which can be irritating in large amounts, limit tea to 1 cup per day and avoid during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless advised by a clinician. Saponins and flavonoids are the best-known constituents reported for Ardisia crenata and plausibly support the traditional soothing and anti-inflammatory use of infusions and decoctions.

Modern relevance: While Ardisia crenata is most common today as an ornamental shrub, these simple traditional infusions remain a living practice in parts of New Zealand, and pharmacognosy studies continue to examine its saponins and other constituents for potential bioactivity (e.g., Ziegler et al., 2019).
