  • Content in this section summarizes historical and cultural records. It is not medical advice.
  • Do not use plants for self-treatment. Safety, efficacy, and appropriate use are not established here.
  • Plant identification errors, allergies, and interactions can cause harm. Consult qualified professionals for health questions.
  • Local legality and regulatory status may vary; verify before collecting, processing, or selling plant materials.

Among coastal peoples of Sri Lanka’s dry zone, leaves of Barringtonia racemosa have long been gathered and drunk as a mild decoction to “soothe burning urine” and related urinary complaints, a practice recorded in Sinhala ethnobotany and field notes on coastal plant use. Along the western littoral of India’s Malabar and Kanara coasts, the bark has been boiled into decoctions for coughs and as a tonic for “blood,” a use noted in early forest literature and later summarized by Usher’s Medicinal Plants of the World. In coastal East Africa—specifically Tanzania and Mozambique—macerations of the leaves are applied externally to bruises and swellings, while leaf infusions are occasionally sipped for headaches, usages recorded in survey work on mangrove-fringe ethnobotany in those regions. In the Pacific, the plant occurs in coastal vegetation of Fiji and Vanuatu, where local informants occasionally use leaf infusions for stomach upsets; these records appear in ethnobotanical surveys of Pacific coastal flora.

A practical leaf decoction can be made by combining 1 heaping teaspoon (about 1–2 g) of clean dried leaves with 250 mL of water, bringing to a gentle boil and simmering for 5 minutes, then cooling to drinking temperature and straining; for urinary “burn,” one cup is taken once daily as a short course. Because seeds can be emetic, pregnant and nursing people should avoid any internal use of B. racemosa unless advised by a qualified practitioner; external preparations should be tested on a small skin area before extended use. The plant is not typically taken in large or frequent doses and is best treated as a short‑term soothing remedy.

Phytochemical work consistently detects triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol glycosides), and condensed tannins in leaves and bark, a profile consistent with the reported demulcent and astringent properties. These constituents are well documented in classical phytochemistry references such as Duke’s Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases and in comparative studies on Barringtonia species; they plausibly account for the soothing and anti‑inflammatory actions observed in use as decoctions and macerations.

Current research has begun to evaluate extracts of B. racemosa for anti‑inflammatory and antioxidant activity in vitro, and artisanal tinctures and leaf powders appear in some tropical herbal markets, while coastal communities still prepare occasional teas for urinary comfort and cough relief.

General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
• Leaves and bark are used in Indonesia and Malaysia to stupefy or kill fish in ponds and rivers, a traditional practice employing saponin-like constituents.

Industrial and craft applications:
• No established industrial or craft applications are documented.

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
• No documented food or beverage uses.

Colorants and tanning:
• No documented dye or tannin uses.

Wood and fiber:
• No documented timber or fiber uses.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
• No documented perfume or cosmetic uses.

Properties relevant to use:
• Leaves and bark release saponins and related compounds in water, reducing surface tension and impairing fish gill function, thereby enabling immobilization or harvest; this mechanism underlies the documented fish-stupefying practice.

Scientific/model-organism use:
• No routine laboratory or model-organism uses are documented.

Standards and regulation:
• No specific standards or regulatory frameworks for Barringtonia racemosa products are documented.

Sustainability and sourcing:
• The practice relies on harvesting leaves and bark from wild or cultivated plants in coastal and riverine habitats; conservation status data are limited, and impact on local populations requires assessment.
