Gaultheria mucronata, also known as the prickly heath, is a flowering plant in the Ericaceae family native to southern Argentina and Chile. It is a compact, evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves and white flowers in spring, followed by showy berries in autumn. The plant is dioecious, requiring both male and female plants to produce fruit, and prefers moist, shaded conditions. Its fruits are edible when ripe, but are mostly used as survival food due to their lack of flavor. There are several cultivars of this plant, including 'Bell's Seedling', 'Crimsonia', 'Mulberry Wine', and 'Wintertime', which have been recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society for their garden merit. The plant is named after a Swedish-Canadian botanist, and its specific epithet, mucronata, means "prickly" in Latin, referring to its foliage.
