Hemitomes is a unique genus of plants that contains only one species, Hemitomes congestum, also known as gnome plant or cone plant. This rare and unusual plant is found in the western coast of North America, from British Columbia to California, and is typically found in dark, dense forests such as the redwood forests. It is a small, stemless perennial plant that grows in clusters in the leaf litter. The plant can be white, yellowish, or reddish-pink in color and lacks chlorophyll, obtaining its nutrients by parasitizing fungi. Due to its rarity, little is known about its life cycle. The plant has a rhizome with fragile roots and is covered in sparse scales that serve as its leaves. It produces an inflorescence on a thick stalk, bearing solitary or clustered flowers with ragged yellowish or pinkish petals and large rounded yellow stigmas. The fruit of the plant is a fleshy white berry. Hemitomes congestum is primarily found in the temperate biome and is a myco-heterotrophic herb, meaning it obtains its nutrients from fungi. Its inflorescence can have one or multiple flowers, and the flowers have fused petals and permanent stigmas. The
