Diospyros squarrosa, also known as the rigid star-berry, is a shrub or small tree found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa. It is dioecious, meaning that it has separate male and female plants. The bark is smooth and grey to brown in color, and the plant can grow up to 10 meters tall. It produces fragrant greenish to creamy-white flowers in early to midsummer, and its fruit is edible and harvested locally. The fruit is about 2 cm in diameter and ripens to a dark yellow color, containing 8 to 10 seeds. The plant is typically found in riparian forests, on rocky hillsides, and near termite mounds, at altitudes ranging from sea level to 1,200 meters. It is native to Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
