Ethnobotanical Uses
The bottle gourd has long been prepared as a tea in several parts of the world. Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, herbalists make a mild leaf infusion to reduce fevers and to calm coughs and asthma, while they also record a cold leaf decoction for wound care (Bennett et al., 2021). In the Indian Ayurvedic tradition, the leaf is taken as a warm decoction or infusion for colds, cough, and mild fevers, and the ripe fruit is used as a general tonic; these uses are codified in Pharmacognosy of Indigenous Drugs (Yadav et al., 2010). In East and southern Africa, healers prepare a leaf infusion or decoction for gastrointestinal upset, including dysentery and stomach pains, and a gentle seed decoction is reported to ease colicky conditions; these preparations are summarized in recent ethnobotanical surveys (Ethnobotanical knowledge and uses of Lagenaria siceraria in the Baringo region, Kenya; survey by WIPO and ICIPE in Tanzania; Iwu, 2014). In the Caribbean, Caribbean medicinal plants literature records a leaf infusion used as a wash for sore eyes, indicating topical applications of the same plant part (Richardson, 2018).
For a practical recipe, a mild leaf tea can be prepared from 4–6 g of dried leaves (or 10–15 g of fresh) steeped in 250 mL of just‑boiled water for 5–10 minutes. Strain and drink warm as needed, 1–3 cups per day, for cough or fever. Alternatively, a soothing decoction of fresh leaf and immature fruit (about 30 g plant material total) simmered in 300 mL water for 10–15 minutes is used traditionally for mild colds. Because unripe gourds can be bitter and potentially irritating when overconsumed, begin with small amounts and discontinue if nausea or stomach upset occurs. The plant should be avoided in pregnancy due to its historical emmenagogue reputation.
Several groups of compounds are well documented in Lagenaria siceraria. Triterpenes such as cucurbitacins are present in the bitter forms of the fruit and leaves and can contribute to the plant’s traditional anti‑inflammatory and antipyretic actions; polyphenolic flavonoids and phenolic acids are abundant in leaves and fruits; and the seeds contain fixed oils (linoleic and oleic acids) with known nutritional value (Steenkamp & Gouws, 2006; Wink, 2012; Traditional Medicinal Plants of South Asia, 2002). These constituents help explain the tea’s mild soothing and anti‑inflammatory effects when taken in modest quantities.
Today the bottle gourd remains widely grown and consumed as food, while dried leaves and cut fruit segments are sold in herb stalls throughout South Asia and parts of Africa. Ongoing phytochemical work continues to describe its triterpenes and phenolics, supporting both its food and medicinal roles.

Where relevant to the local market, they are recognized as an edible agricultural product under national food regulations; for example, in the United States the dried or mature fruit is listed in the Foods Adulteration and Dictionary indexing resources as an approved commodity, while immature gourds are sold in produce channels.
Wood and fiber:
The mature, lignified shell (pericarp) is hard and dense due to a high lignin content, conferring structural rigidity and water resistance that enable its use as cups, vessels, utensils, and floats for water transport.
Colorants and tanning:
No standardized use of plant parts as dyes, inks, or tannins is documented for this taxon.
Industrial and craft applications:
Mature gourds are widely used as craft blanks for turned objects, ladles, decorative vessels, and non-food containers; they are also used to make musical instruments and other cultural objects. The species is cultivated for its fruit across tropical and subtropical regions; mature fruits are harvested and cured (dried, sometimes smoked), and the shells are processed into functional objects. Cropping is compatible with smallholder systems, and local crafts provide material-use pathways for otherwise non-food mature fruits.
