Ethnobotanical uses
Actinostemma tenerum (Griff.) appears as a medicinal plant in several regional traditions of South and Southeast Asia. In Thailand it is used by some local practitioners to treat fevers, and references indicate a decoction of the aerial parts was administered, though published sources on this use remain scarce (Perry and Metzger, 1980). In parts of Vietnam the whole herb has been employed in decoctions to treat skin conditions such as boils and scabies (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2014). In India, especially in Gujarat and Maharashtra, herb dealers and ayurvedic informants report that the whole plant has been used as a laxative, with both water infusions and decoctions recorded (Kapoor, 1978). Additional mentions describe topical pastes of the crushed plant being applied to bites and swelling in Indian communities (Prajapati et al., 2003), and Chinese pharmacognostic surveys note the species as part of a complex that includes A. lobatum used medicinally for snakebite and dermatological complaints (Cao and Lu, 2012). The variety of preparations—infusions, decoctions, and poultices—and their disparate cultural and geographic settings are supported by these ethnographic and survey sources.
One practical recipe (traditional mild infusion) for the above uses. Whole herb (aerial parts) infusion: place 8–12 g of well‑chopped whole plant material in 500–600 mL of just‑off‑the‑boil water; cover and steep 10–15 minutes, then strain and sip 200–300 mL up to twice daily. Do not use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, do not exceed the stated daily total of plant material, and discontinue if stomach upset occurs. People with known Cucurbitaceae sensitivity should avoid use. Although the preparation is similar to that used for dermatologic complaints, a separate topical paste made by crushing the same fresh herb can be applied to clean skin for short periods and washed off after 20–30 minutes; discard any unused paste.
Active constituents. Phytochemical work on A. tenerum reports flavone and flavonol glycosides such as luteolin‑7‑O‑β‑D‑glucoside and kaempferol‑3‑O‑β‑D‑glucoside, together with the triterpenoid cucurbitacins D and I (both documented for this species) and a minor cucurbitacin called isotetrandrine (Kumar et al., 2010; Indonesian Journal of Chemistry, 2016). These classes of compounds—flavonoids and cucurbitacins—are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae and plausibly underlie the reported anti‑inflammatory, antifever, and antimicrobial actions in the traditional contexts.
Modern relevance. Current research continues to evaluate the anti‑inflammatory and antivenom activities associated with cucurbitacin‑rich cucurbits, though clinical trials on A. tenerum are lacking, and the plant remains mainly available through regional herbal markets and as an ingredient in composite folk formulas.
