Philadelphus lewisii, also known as Lewis' mock-orange, is a deciduous shrub native to western North America and is the state flower of Idaho. It was first discovered by Meriwether Lewis during the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1806 and was named after him. The shrub grows up to 3 meters in height and has oval, light green leaves with a rough texture. Its flowers, which have a sweet scent similar to orange blossoms, are produced in clusters and have four white petals and yellow stamens. The plant is commonly found in open coniferous forests and on forest edges, as well as in chaparral and riparian areas. It is also able to spread through both vegetative and seed reproduction. Lewis' mock-orange is well-adapted to fire and can resprout after being top-killed. It has been used by Native American tribes for various purposes, and is now cultivated for its flashy flowers and fruity scent. The Waterton Mockorange, a hybrid of Philadelphus lewisii, was named after a national park in Canada. In addition to its cultural significance, Philadelphus lewisii is also protected by Idaho state law.
