Maytenus aquifolia, commonly known as espinheira-santa, is a tree or shrub species endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome in southeastern Brazil. It is found in the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. The species is used medicinally to treat ulcers and gastritis, however, its indiscriminate usage is threatening its survival in its natural habitat.
