Silene nutans, also known as Nottingham catchfly, is a diploid, herbaceous, perennial plant that can grow up to 25-80 centimeters tall. It has white or pinkish flowers that droop on short stalks and remain open for three nights to prevent self-fertilization. This plant is widespread in Europe and parts of Asia, and has been introduced to North America. It is typically found in open grasslands and on rock outcrops, and is pollinated by night-flying moths. Silene nutans is also the host plant for the leaf mining moth Coleophora galbulipennella. The common name "Nottingham catchfly" comes from its former occurrence on the walls of Nottingham Castle, and it was chosen as the county flower for Nottingham. However, it is no longer found in the city or county of Nottinghamshire. To commemorate the re-opening of Nottingham Castle, volunteers were asked to grow the plant from seeds and donate them back to the city.
