Opuntia galapageia is a species of cactus that is native to the Galápagos Islands, which are part of Ecuador. It was first described in 1837 and has since been recorded on various islands within the archipelago. Several other species of Opuntia were previously thought to be separate from O. galapageia, but are now considered to be part of the same species. This includes Opuntia echios, Opuntia helleri, Opuntia insularis, Opuntia megasperma, Opuntia myriacantha, and Opuntia saxicola. There are also several varieties and subtaxa of O. galapageia that have been named based on their distribution on different islands. This species is known for its formidable spines, with some reaching up to ten inches in length.
