It is an annual herbaceous plant that grows up to 1.5 meters in height. The leaves are alternate, lanceolate, and up to 10 cm long. The flowers are small, greenish-white, and clustered in axillary spikes. The fruit is a small, three-angled achene.

Tropical amaranth (Amaranthus polygonoides) is a species of flowering plant found in North America and the Caribbean.
