Ehretia rigida, also known as puzzle bush or deurmekaarbos in Afrikaans, is a small tree with a tangled growth habit that belongs to the borage family. It can be found in a wide range of habitats in eastern South Africa, as well as in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. This deciduous tree is hardy and typically grows up to 5 meters tall. Its branches are rigid, giving it its specific name. The leaves are leathery and rough with tiny barbs along the edges, and often have pockets of hairs or acarodomatia that provide shelter for mites. The bark is smooth and grey, becoming rough on older stems. In early spring, the tree produces fragrant lilac or white flowers, followed by small fruits that turn from green to orange, red, and finally black. The fruits contain 4 seeds that are reniform in shape and have a sculpted surface. The genus name, Ehretia, is in honor of the 18th century botanist and illustrator, Georg Dionysius Ehret.
