Ehretia anacua is a medium-sized tree that can be found in eastern Mexico and southern Texas in the United States. It belongs to the borage family and is also known as anacua, knockaway, and sandpaper tree. The tree can reach heights of 20-45 feet and has reddish-brown to gray bark with rough, sandpaper-like leaves. It produces white flowers in the spring and summer, which are followed by spherical yellowish-orange fruits that are edible for both humans and animals. Anacua is typically found in riparian zones and floodplains, and its leaves are the sole food source for the Texas tortoise beetle. It has a lifespan of at least 50 years and can be found at elevations from sea level to 1,000 feet.
