Schisandra sphaerandra, a close relative of Schisandra chinensis that yields the well‑known fruit “wu wei zi,” is used in north‑central and northwest Chinese herbal practice in essentially the same way as the other Schisandra species. Dried ripe fruits are taken as infusions and decoctions for cough and wheeze, as a tonic for “qi and fluids,” and to calm shortness of breath and fatigue; ethnopharmacological surveys describe these uses in Han herbal practice (State Pharmacopoeia Commission of the PRC, 2020) and in the mountains of Sichuan where the species occurs in the wild (Li and Zhao, 2022). Among Tibetan-speaking communities of Yunnan and Sichuan, the same fruit is decocted with other herbs to ease cough and shortness of breath and to support general strength after illness (Zhang et al., 2021). Local herbal texts on the Chinese northwest plateau similarly report that both fruits and roots of S. sphaerandra are macerated in strong rice wine for a warming, strengthening drink (Local Materia Medica of Qinghai, 1992).
A practical preparation from these traditions is a mild, double‑boiled decoction of dried fruit. Simmer roughly 9–12 g of dried Schisandra fruit with water for 15–20 minutes, strain, and drink one cup two or three times daily for cough relief or as a general tonic. A strong tincture can also be prepared by macerating 1 part by weight of dried fruit in 5 parts by volume of 45–50% ethanol for 2–4 weeks in the dark, shaking daily, then filtering; take 10–20 drops in a little warm water two or three times daily. If using rice wine for maceration, add 1 part dried fruit to 5 parts local spirit and steep 1–3 weeks. Because Schisandra can be stimulating, avoid during pregnancy and use caution if you have acid‑peptic disease, gallstones, or are taking sedative or anticoagulant drugs; keep doses modest and discontinue if headaches or gastric discomfort occur.
The fruits of Schisandra spp. consistently contain dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans—schisandrin, schisandrin B, gomisin A, and schisantherin B—which are well established in phytochemical studies of S. sphaerandra (Panossian and Wagner, 1999; Li and Zhao, 2022). These lignans are considered the major bioactive constituents underpinning the antiasthmatic, expectorant, and tonic actions reported in traditional practice, and they contribute to the characteristic “five‑flavor” profile recognized in the Chinese materia medica.
Although the majority of modern research on Schisandra lignans is focused on S. chinensis, the traditional applications of S. sphaerandra in decoctions and wine‑macerated preparations continue locally in northwest China, and standardized extracts of Schisandra spp. remain available in herbal shops and commercial tinctures sold as tonics for respiratory support.
