The plant has a basal rosette of gray-green, hairy leaves, and a single, erect stem with a single flower head. The flower head is composed of many yellow ray florets, and the center is filled with yellow disc florets.
Wyethia helenioides is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, commonly referred to as gray mule's ears or whitehead mule-ears. It is found mainly in the California Coast Ranges, Transverse Ranges, Peninsular Ranges, and some areas of the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is a short, low growing golden-rayed wildflower that resembles a sunflower, with a basal rosette of gray-green, hairy leaves, and a single, erect stem with a single flower head composed of many yellow ray florets, and the center filled with yellow disc florets. It is typically found in sunny clearings of mixed oak forests in coastal California.
