Tithonia diversifolia, the Mexican sunflower, is widely used in folk medicine across its native and introduced ranges. In central Mexico, the Nahua people prepare a decoction of fresh leaves to relieve stomach cramps and diarrhea, a practice documented by García et al., 2018. In Brazil, the Caatinga communities brew a mild tea from dried leaves to treat fever and reduce inflammation, as reported by Silva et al., 2020. In West Africa, the Upper West Region of Ghana employs a poultice of crushed leaves for wound healing and to alleviate pain, a use noted in the ethnobotanical survey of K. A. et al., 2017. In all three traditions, the leaves are the primary plant part used; bark and roots are rarely mentioned in the literature.

A simple, safe preparation is a leaf tea that can be made at home. Take 5 g of dried Tithonia diversifolia leaves and add them to 250 ml of freshly boiled water. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes, then strain. Drink one cup twice daily for mild digestive discomfort.
