is a perennial temperate herb with a variety of names, including costmary, alecost, balsam herb, bible leaf, and mint geranium. It can grow up to 2 meters tall and has serrated oval leaves. During the summer, it produces small yellow flowers in clusters. The plant is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean and has been used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. It was commonly grown in herb gardens during the medieval period, but has since disappeared in Europe. However, it is still widely used in southwest Asia. The leaves of the plant contain essential oils, with carvone being the main component. It has been traditionally used to treat menstruation problems, stomach issues, and as an astringent. In the 17th century, herbalist Nicholas Culpeper recommended it for various ailments, including chronic headaches and digestive issues. It is also known for its ability to heal old ulcers when made into a salve.
