Senecio gallicus is an annual plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family and the genus Senecio. It is known for its ability to thrive in harsh environmental conditions and is commonly found in southern France and the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in deserts, shrublands, and coastal plains. This species plays a significant role in shaping the genetic structure of populations, with historical associations being more prevalent than ongoing gene flow. It is also known by different names in different languages, such as French groundsel, Azuzón de Alborán, Séneçon de France, and Senecione gallico.
This plant has been extensively studied due to its unique intraspecific phylogeographic structure, which is specific to the species. Comparisons of its allozyme and chloroplast variation suggest that it survived glaciation periods in coastal refugia during the Pleistocene era. However, one subspecies, Senecio alboranicus or azuzón de Alborán, is considered critically endangered and endemic to Isla de Alborán, a small volcanic island located between Spain and Morocco. This species is one of the 26 plants that have inhabited the island, but its population has been fluctuating due to various
