Liatris punctata, also known as dotted gayfeather, is a perennial herb native to North America. It can be found throughout central Canada, the central United States, and northern Mexico. The plant has an erect stem and can grow up to 3 feet tall. Its leaves are 3-6 inches long and it produces purple or white flowers from August to September. L. punctata is a slow-growing and long-lived plant, with some specimens estimated to be over 35 years old. It is found in a variety of habitats, including pine forests, grasslands, and prairies. The plant is drought-tolerant and fire-tolerant, able to resprout from its rhizome after a fire. It is also a host plant for the wholeleaf Indian paintbrush. L. punctata is palatable to livestock and is a food source for various animals and insects. It has been used by Native Americans for food and is also used for prairie restoration and as an ornamental plant.
