Helianthus porteri, also known as Porter's sunflower, Stone Mountain daisy, and Confederate daisy, is a species of sunflower found in the southeastern United States. Despite its common names, it is actually a type of sunflower rather than a daisy. The plant was named in 1849 by Harvard botanist Asa Gray in honor of Thomas Conrad Porter, a minister and botanist who collected it in Georgia. It was later renamed Helianthus porteri by John F. Pruski in 1998. This sunflower is native to states like Alabama and Georgia, but has also been introduced to North Carolina where it can be found in granite outcrop areas. It typically grows on thin soils around flat rock granite and gneiss outcrops and can reach up to 100 cm in height. Each plant produces multiple flower heads with yellow ray and disc florets. Despite its connection to the Confederacy through its presence on Stone Mountain, its name is more closely related to its botanical history.
