The Spanish iris, also known as Iris xiphium, is a bulbous plant native to Spain and Portugal. It can also be found in other areas of Europe and North Africa. This species is known for its blue, violet, white, or yellow flowers, which typically bloom in May and June. The plant can reach up to 80 cm in height and has greyish-green leaves that emerge in autumn and die after the flowers fade. The Spanish iris is popular among florists for its striking color combinations and is a hardy plant that can be grown in northern Europe. However, it cannot survive in all parts of North America due to frost damage. There are also several popular varieties of this species, such as 'Lusitanica' with all-yellow flowers. The Spanish iris is often used in hybridization, with the most popular hybrid being the Dutch iris. There are also various cultivars of the Spanish iris, including 'Blue Angel', 'Golden Harvest', and 'Purple Sensation'.
