Iris spuria subsp. carthaliniae is a subspecies of the rhizomatous perennial plant Iris spuria, native to the Caucasus region. It is a tall iris with sky blue or white flowers and is cultivated as an ornamental plant in temperate regions. Originally described as a separate species, it was later classified as a subspecies by Brian Mathew in 1981. It has a thick, creeping rhizome and linear leaves, and produces 3-5 terminal flowers in summer. The flowers are lightly fragranced and come in shades of blue and white. It has been found to contain several new chemical compounds. This subspecies is hardy and can be grown in gardens in full sun with plenty of moisture. It is also used by iris breeders to create hybrids, with the cultivar 'Georgian Delicacy' being a known example.

Germination/Propagation Top
Suggest a correction or add new data!Begin at 20°C for 6 weeks, cool to 4°C for 6 weeks, then gradually increase to 10°C over 6 weeks. If no germination, the cycle is repeated. |
Requires Soaking: These seeds need to be soaked in warm water until they swell, which can take 24-48 hours. Seeds that float are usually not viable and should be discarded, along with the soaking water. |
sow fresh or soak old seed; prechill 4 weeks or place outdoors over winter and bring indoors once germinated to avoid temperature shock; transplant at 4 leaves |
