Iris speculatrix is a beardless iris found in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. It is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial with dark green, evergreen leaves and long slender stems. The flowers come in various shades of blue and bloom in spring and summer. It has been classified in the subgenus Limniris and the series Chinenses of the genus Iris. The species has been studied for its biochemistry and chromosome count, and is known for its distinctive markings on the petals resembling spectacles. It is found in temperate areas at altitudes of 500-1,800 meters above sea level. Due to its rarity and attractive appearance, it is protected from over-collection in some areas. It is hardy to USDA Zone 6 and prefers well-drained soils and full sun. There are also some hybrids and cultivars of this species.
