Iris songarica is a beardless iris that belongs to the genus Iris, specifically in the subgenus Limniris and series Tenuifoliae. It is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial that is native to Central Asia, specifically Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. It has long strap-like leaves, a tall stem, and 2-3 flowers in shades of violet, dark blue, and lavender blue. The flowers are similar in form to Iris spuria, but have different color shades. The plant has a slender, knobbly rhizome with filamentous roots that can grow up to 1.5 meters deep into the soil. Its leaves are rigid, strap-like, and greyish-green, and its stem can grow up to 50 centimeters long. The plant produces 2-3 terminal flowers in spring, and after flowering, it produces an ovoid seed capsule. Studies have found that Iris songarica contains isoflavones and has strong drought resistance. It is not commonly cultivated in the UK or Europe, but it can be propagated by division or seed growing. The plant has various uses, including medicinal and cosmetic purposes.
