Iris persica, also known as the Persian iris, is a stunning and fragrant native plant of Iran. It has been cultivated for centuries and was first described by Philip Miller in 1732. This short perennial has narrow leaves and produces 2-inch wide flowers in shades of brown, green, and grey. It is typically found in alpine regions of Iraq, Turkey, and Syria at elevations between 300 and 5400 feet. While it originally grew as an indoor plant, it can now be grown outdoors with proper warmth and shelter. Its beauty has been praised by famous gardening writers such as Vita Sackville-West and Gertrude Jekyll, who described it as "endlessly beautiful." With its delicate petals and striking colors, Iris persica is a beloved addition to any garden.
