Iris furcata, also known as the forked iris, is a perennial plant species found in the Caucasus mountains of Moldavia and southern Ukraine. It has short, sword-shaped leaves and a slender stem that branches in the middle, holding small purple, deep purple, blue-violet, light blue, or violet flowers. This plant is often cultivated as an ornamental in temperate regions and is sometimes considered a parent species instead of a synonym of Iris aphylla due to its chromosomal and morphological differences. Iris furcata has a diploid chromosome count and is commonly known as the 'Forked Stemmed Iris' or 'Fork Iris'. It is found in dry, open pastures and can tolerate alkaline soils and light shade. The plant is toxic if ingested and may cause skin irritation. It has been used in iris breeding programs to create smaller sized irises with better branching.
