Iris filifolia is a bulbous perennial plant that belongs to the genus Iris and subgenus Xiphium. It is native to North Africa and Europe and typically grows to a height of 10-16 inches. The plant has thin leaves and produces red-purple flowers with orange spots or yellow stripes. It is often mistakenly called "Spanish Iris," but its correct name means "thread-leaved iris." Iris filifolia is found in sandy areas and is best grown in a bulb frame. It is toxic like other plants in the genus. There are several known cultivars and hybrids of this species. It was first described in 1842 and is found in Morocco, Spain, and Gibraltar.
