Iris benacensis is a rhizomatous perennial plant native to Italy, belonging to the genus Iris and subgenus Iris. It has blue-purple flowers with a white, blue, and yellow beard and is often cultivated as an ornamental plant in temperate regions. It was once classified as a synonym of Iris aphylla, but has since been recognized as a distinct species. The plant has a similar form to Iris aphylla but differs in flower form and has stout and creeping rhizomes. It is found in Italy, particularly in the provinces of South Tyrol and Como, and grows on calcareous rocks at altitudes of up to 1,000 meters. It is listed in the Encyclopedia of Life and is considered easy to grow and worthy of cultivation. However, like many other irises, it is toxic if ingested and may cause skin irritation.
