Suggest a correction!Hyacinthus (Tourn. ex L.) is a small genus in the Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae. It is treated as monotypic, containing the sole wild species Hyacinthus orientalis L., the species from which the familiar cultivated hyacinth derives (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). Its distribution spans the eastern Mediterranean and southwestern Asia, from northeastern Greece through Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Israel, typically in open woodlands, rocky slopes, and cultivated or disturbed ground at low to mid elevations (POWO, 2024). Plants are bulbous geophytes with two to four basal, linear-lanceolate, semi-erect leaves and a compact racemose inflorescence of numerous highly fragrant, nodding to upright, usually blue to violet, tubular-campanulate flowers; the perianth segments are united at the base, the ovary is superior and trilocular, and the fruit is a capsule with small, black, angular seeds (Christenhusz et al., 2017).
Diversity is centered in the Levant and Anatolia, and the genus is effectively restricted to the Near East. While widely naturalized in cultivation, the native wild population is narrow, reflecting a long history of domestication and horticultural selection (POWO, 2024). The genus is entomophilous and prized for early-spring fragrance, but its specialized pollination and seed-dispersal ecology remain incompletely documented in primary literature (Christenhusz et al., 2017). Basic chromosome data are widely reported in popular sources; however, a consistent, sourced count for the wild species is not securely established in the peer‑reviewed literature consulted here.
Recent treatments synonymize historically segregated hyacinthoid taxa into Fessia, and recognize former sections or subgenera within Hyacinthus—such as Euhyacinthus and Botryanthus—as independent genera (Chase et al., 2016; WFO, 2024). H. orientalis is therefore the sole accepted species in Hyacinthus; the name H. orientalis var. albulus Pers. is cited in synonymy (POWO, 2024). In cultivation, Hyacinthus is a major ornamental spring bulb grown for cut flowers and garden display, and it has occasionally persisted as a casualized escape from horticulture, but it is not regarded as invasive (Christenhusz et al., 2017).
The genus is not assessed as threatened in global red lists, although precise conservation assessments for native populations remain limited. Key priorities include mapping wild occurrence, understanding population viability, and securing verifiable chromosome data (POWO, 2024).
