Allium oleraceum, also known as field garlic, is a wild onion species found in Eurasia. It grows up to 30 centimeters tall and reproduces through seeds, bulbs, and small bulblets. Unlike other species, it is rare to find flower-heads containing only bulblets. The plant has two-part spathes and its name comes from the Latin word for vegetable or herbal. It is widespread in Europe, with some populations in Turkey and the Caucasus, and has been naturalized in scattered locations in North America. In the UK, it is found in dry, grassy areas and is declining due to erosion. Its highest recorded altitude is 365 meters in Derbyshire. A former subspecies, Allium oleraceum subsp. girerdii, is now classified as Allium oporinanthum.
