Allium caeruleum, also known as blue globe onion or blue ornamental onion, is a beautiful bulbous plant native to Central Asia. It can be found in dry slopes, plains, and steppes in countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. This plant has been featured in the Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe puis L'illustration horticole and has received the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the British Royal Horticultural Society. Growing up to 80 cm tall, it produces strap-shaped leaves and small globes of blue flowers in early summer, which are known to attract butterflies. A. caeruleum is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in well-drained soil and is resistant to deer. It is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 4-8.
