Phoenix rupicola, also known as cliff date palm, is a flowering plant found in the mountainous forests of India and Bhutan. It typically grows on cliffs, hillsides, and similar terrain at elevations between 300 and 1200 meters. Unfortunately, this species is facing threats due to habitat loss in its native range. However, it has been reported to be naturalized in other areas such as the Andaman Islands, the Leeward Islands, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. It has also been recently spotted in Saint Lucia. These palm trees can reach heights of up to 8 meters and have a width of 20 cm. The leaves are pinnately arranged and can grow up to 3 meters long with 35 cm leaflets. The pseudo petioles, or leaf stalks, are armed with spines, although they are not as numerous or sharp as other Phoenix species. The fruit of the Phoenix rupicola is an oblong, yellow to orange drupe that contains a single large seed.
