General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
Wood from pruning and thinning is used for small-scale turning and carving, as well as as a decorative bark mulch in horticulture. Edible use is not documented; ivy foliage and berries contain saponins and are typically regarded as non-edible.

Industrial and craft applications:
The species functions primarily as a garden plant. Minor craft uses include horticultural sculpting/training (topiary) and related craft/tourist items made from pruned stems.

Colorants and tanning:
Bark contains hydrolysable tannins similar to those reported in closely related Hedera species, and has been used in small-scale natural brown dyeing of protein fibers and in vegetable tanning processes for leather.

Wood and fiber:
Wood is dense and fine-grained, suitable for small carved objects; bark fibers are occasionally explored for coarse twine and rope. The species is also cultivated for ornamental cut foliage.

Properties relevant to use:
Heartwood is reported as brown with a high lignin-to-cellulose ratio. Sapwood is light; bark hydrolysable tannins have tanning and mordanting utility. Flowers are a source of nectar for honey; foliage and sap contain irritant saponins.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Propagation is by cuttings; ornamental nursery production dominates supply. As a widely cultivated garden plant, resource impacts are generally low relative to timber species, and pruning-derived material is commonly local.
