Among the Mapuche of southern Chile, aerial parts of Scandix pecten-veneris have been reported as a tea for stomach complaints; ethnobotanical work with healers recorded its preparation by cold infusion and use during meals (Bennett et al., 2021). In central Spain, “infusión de pecten-veneris” is listed among household remedies for digestive discomfort, particularly after heavy meals, and is mentioned in regional ethnobotanical surveys (Vallès et al., 2004; Vallès and González-Castañón, 2009). In parts of the Caucasus and North Anatolia, dried aerial parts are steeped as a light digestive tea, sometimes with a pinch of salt; local knowledge surveys report this simple infusion as a post‑meal aid (Keller et al., 2005).
Practical recipe (digestive tea): measure 1–2 teaspoons (about 1–2 g) of dried aerial parts into a cup, pour 200–250 mL of just‑boiled water, and steep, covered, for 10–15 minutes; drink up to one cup after meals. Coumarin‑containing plants can potentiate anticoagulants and may interact with some medications; avoid use during pregnancy and lactation and consult a healthcare professional if you are on pharmaceuticals or have clotting disorders.
Active constituents consistent with Apiaceae chemistry include flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol and their glycosides) and phenolic acids such as chlorogenic acid; these classes have been reported in Scandix pecten-veneris and are known to support the tea’s traditional digestive and bitter actions (Aparicio‑García et al., 2011; Recent Research in Botany, 2012). Modern relevance remains modest: small studies have evaluated antioxidant activity, and several commercial herbal mixes include dried aerial parts of the plant, while simple digestive teas continue in everyday practice in home pharmacies.
