General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
Chervil is cultivated and marketed as a fresh culinary herb, used raw as a delicate garnish in salads, soups, omelettes, and sauces. The fresh herb is a core component of fines herbes in French cuisine, and occasionally of herb blends such as fines herbes blends and specialty garnishes. It is also grown and sold as a microgreen for culinary finishing.

Colorants and tanning:
No documented non-medicinal uses.

Industrial and craft applications:
No documented non-medicinal uses.

Wood and fiber:
No documented non-medicinal uses.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
No documented non-medicinal uses.

Properties relevant to use:
The volatile leaf oil imparts a mild, anisic aromatic quality that integrates well into delicate preparations and contributes to the characteristic profile of fines herbes blends.

Standards and regulation:
Chervil is recognized as a food plant in general commerce and subject to national food safety and labeling regulations in producing and importing jurisdictions (e.g., U.S. Food and Drug Administration; European Union). Essential oil components such as estragole (anethole isomer) may be subject to regulatory scrutiny in fragrance applications due to potential genotoxic concerns; however, chervil is predominantly used as a fresh culinary herb rather than a fragrance material.

Sustainability and sourcing:
Chervil is a short-cycle, field-grown herb cultivated for its fresh market; harvested before flowering to maintain leaf quality. Yields per hectare are modest relative to major culinary herbs. Commercial production is concentrated in temperate regions and near fresh markets, with some controlled-environment cultivation for microgreens.

Germination/Propagation Top

Suggest a correction or add new data!
Sow seeds at 20°C, expecting germination within 3 months without further temperature treatment.
Resents Transplanting: These plants do not tolerate the disturbance of their roots well. It's best to sow these seeds in their final growing location or in a container from which they can be moved without disturbing the root ball.
Requires Light or Surface Sowing: These seeds need light to germinate and should not be covered with soil or only very lightly. They are often very small and sown directly on the surface of the growing medium.
