Selaginella rupestris, also known as northern selaginella, ledge spike-moss, or rock spike-moss, is a type of spike-moss found in dry rocky areas in eastern North America and one location in Greenland. This plant has a wide but scattered distribution. When there is no water available, it curls up into a ball, earning it the nickname "bird nest moss." However, when it encounters water, it unfurls. This species is considered imperiled and threatened in the state of Indiana.
