Tmesipteris tannensis is a fern ally endemic to New Zealand. It is usually found growing epiphytically on trees and tree ferns, but can also be found growing terrestrially. An example of its occurrence is in the Central Westland of South Island, New Zealand, where it is found in the lowest tier of a tiered phytocoenosis. This phytocoenosis includes an overstory of miro, rimu and mountain totara, a mid-story of tree ferns such as Cyathea smithii and Dicksonia squarrosa, and a lowest tier of epiphytic associates such as Asplenium polyodon, Astelia solandri and Blechnum discolor, along with T. tannensis.
