It is a small, delicate plant with a creeping rhizome and small, narrow, bright green fronds. The fronds are divided into two parts, the sterile frond and the fertile frond. The sterile frond is much larger than the fertile frond and is divided into many small leaflets. The fertile frond is much shorter and has a single, narrow, spore-bearing lobe.

Tmesipteris elongata is a small, delicate fern ally native to south eastern Australia and New Zealand. It is characterized by its bright green fronds, which are divided into two parts: the sterile frond, which is much larger and divided into many small leaflets, and the fertile frond, which is much shorter and has a single, narrow, spore-bearing lobe. It is often seen growing on soft tree ferns in moist valleys.
