Psilotum complanatum, also known as the flatfork fern, is a rare herbaceous epiphytic fern ally that is believed to be a true fern that has lost some of its typical fern-like characteristics. It has simple, leafless stems with dichotomous branching and minute scales, arranged in two rows. The stems and branches have a triangular-shaped core of xylem and are covered in brownish hair-like rhizoids. The plant produces bean-shaped, monolete spores and its gametophyte is non-photosynthetic, relying on a fungus for nutrition. P. complanatum is found in moist evergreen forests in various parts of the world, including the Malay Peninsula, Australia, Fiji islands, Mexico, Hawaii, South America, and the Nicobar group of islands in India. It typically grows on the trunks of trees or other epiphytic plants. Some botanists believe that P. complanatum is a primitive fern-like plant that has survived from an ancient lineage.
