Coryphopteris simulata, also known as bog-fern or Massachusetts fern, is a species of fern found in the Northeastern United States. It is often mistaken for other ferns such as the silvery spleenwort, New York fern, and marsh fern due to its similar shape and size. The plant is bright green in color with a long and slender stalk. Its leaves are monomorphic and pinnately compounded, with unbranched veins and around 15-18 lobes. The plant produces both fertile and sterile leaflets, with the fertile ones being slightly longer. It has a slender, black rhizome and produces spores in the summertime. Coryphopteris simulata was first described in 1894 and has been placed in different genera over the years. It is often overlooked due to its similarities to other ferns and its rarity. The plant is native to Eastern Canada and the North and Northeastern United States, and can be found in shaded, marshy wetlands and bog areas. It prefers moist, acidic soil and is often found growing among bryophytes.
