Adiantum formosum, also known as the giant maidenhair or black stem maidenhair, is a fern native to Australia and New Zealand. It was first described by Scottish botanist Robert Brown in 1810 and its species name, formosum, means "handsome" or "beautiful" in Latin. This fern can grow up to 120 cm in height and has a deep rhizome that can reach up to 60 cm underground. Its stems are black and can grow up to 90 cm in length, while its triangular fronds have rectangular segments and can reach up to 2 meters in height. Adiantum formosum is commonly found in rainforests and open eucalyptus forests, often near streams or in moist areas. It is easy to grow in cultivation and a variegated form is also available.
