Platycerium bifurcatum, also known as the elkhorn fern or common staghorn fern, is a fern species found in Java, New Guinea, and eastern Australia. It is typically found in and around rainforests and can grow up to 90 cm tall and 80 cm wide. The plant has heart-shaped sterile fronds and arching grey-green fertile fronds that can reach up to 90 cm in length. Its name comes from the Greek words for "flat" and "horn," referencing its forked fertile fronds. This fern is popular as an ornamental plant in gardens and has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It can be grown outdoors in temperate regions with a minimum temperature of 5 °C or as a houseplant in colder climates.
