Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Loxogramme (Blume) C.Presl is an epiphytic fern genus placed in Polypodiaceae (subfamily Loxogrammoideae) according to the World Ferns Checklist (WFO, 2024). About 30 species are accepted (POWO, 2024). It ranges from the Himalaya and southern China through Malesia to the Pacific islands, in humid forests from sea level to ~2500 m. The type species, Loxogramme scalaris (Wall. ex Hook.) C.Presl, anchors the group (Jansen, 1992).
Loxogramme species have simple, entire fronds, usually leathery, with a single continuous sorus parallel to the midrib. The sorus lacks paraphyses and sporangia form a single row, separating the genus from other Polypodiaceae. Rhizomes are short‑creeping with brown lanceolate scales; leaf bases persist as small stipe remnants. Venation is reticulate, lacking free veins seen in many polypods. In several Malesian taxa the fronds exhibit dimorphism, with fertile fronds bearing narrower, more elongate laminae than their sterile counterparts (Jansen, 1992).
Diversity peaks in Malesia and New Guinea, where many species are narrow endemics. In China and Taiwan, Loxogramme salicifolia and Loxogramme pyriformis dominate epiphytic communities on rocks and trunks; in the Pacific islands the genus grows on volcanic substrates and cliffs. Elevational range spans lowland rainforests to montane cloud forests. Many species are local endemics on single limestone outcrops or mountain ridges, underscoring pronounced geographic fragmentation (Jansen, 1992).
Reproduction is sporic, wind‑dispersed; some species also produce bulbils for vegetative spread. Base chromosome number is x = 36 (Brownlie, 1958), shared with many polypods.
Taxonomically, Loxogramme comprises two informal groups, formerly subgenera Loxogramme and Pseudoloxogramme (Jansen, 1992). Molecular data place it as sister to the rest of Polypodiaceae, supporting subfamily Loxogrammoideae (Liu et al., 2020). Loxogramme dimorpha has been synonymised with L. insignis (Jansen, 1992). Some treatments assign a separate family Loxogramaceae, but the APG‑IV alignment (WFO, 2024) prefers Polypodiaceae. Some recent treatments treat the two groups as sections rather than subgenera, reflecting ongoing taxonomic flux (Jansen, 1992).
Human use is limited; a few species serve as ornamental epiphytes in tropical horticulture, but none are cultivated as crops or timber. The genus is not invasive. Cultivated plants often thrive in high‑humidity terrariums where their glossy fronds provide attractive foliage.
Conservation concerns focus on habitat loss from deforestation and climate‑driven changes in cloud‑forest humidity. Population data and phylogenetic resolution are still lacking, underscoring the need for targeted fieldwork and molecular work to protect the remaining species. Molecular barcoding is incomplete for several island populations, impeding precise species delimitation.
